Spring Break Travel Tips
Have you ever asked yourself, “Do I really need travel insurance?” If you’re one of the rare few that have never lost a piece of luggage or had something stolen while traveling, then your answer might be ‘No’, but for the rest of us, the answer is probably ‘yes’.
Organizing travel is hard enough even without worrying about travel insurance, identify theft, and luggage theft. Oh, and don’t forget about making sure your home is protected while you’re away. But don’t worry; we’re here to help.
Here are the top 4 spring break travel tips to help you keep your piece of mind and be able to truly relax during your spring break.
Spring Break Travel Tip #1: Do I Really Need Travel Insurance?
What are the chances that you get sick right before your trip, or that your airline goes out of business?
In theory, a lot of things could go wrong, but what are the chances something bad happens? Are they high enough to justify the added cost of travel insurance?
Nowadays, not many travel expenses are fully refundable. Usually, they’re non-refundable or maybe only part of the trip is refundable.
Recently, one of our clients went to Orlando for his honeymoon. It was his wife’s dream to go to Disney World and he loved the rides at Universal Studios. They planned an amazing 10-day trip, split between Disney and Universal. I bet you can guess what happened next?
They both got really sick and had to return home after 24 hours. Not the best honeymoon ever, but what happened to all the money they spent? Disney and Universal aren’t cheap!
They didn’t talk to us first and had purchased ZERO travel insurance to cover their trip. Long story short, Disney pulled the ultimate customer service move ever and gave them a 100% refund on all their expenses and even upgraded their room for whenever they wanted to return. Universal refunded half of their money. The airline charged them a change fee plus the difference in ticket price. In total, they ended up throwing away more than $2,000 just because they got sick.
Now do you think travel insurance is worth it? For the “Honeymooner” clients, the answer is now a resounding ‘Yes!’ Travel insurance is worth every penny. It would have saved them thousands of dollars.
Sometimes you can’t plan for the unexpected. The real question you might consider asking is, “What type of travel insurance do I need?”
Travel insurance can cover anything from accidents; such as getting sick, missed flights, and canceled tours, lost baggage and theft. Every situation is different depending on your age, family, where you’re traveling and other factors. Contact one of our agents to compare options and pricing. We’re more than happy to answer any questions you have.
Spring Break Travel Tip #2: Protect Yourself from Identify Theft
Locals can spot tourists from a mile away and they target you. It’s sad, but true. What would happen if someone stole your purse or wallet with all your money, credit cards, ID, and other personal items?
Theft of your personal information can result in financial loss ranging from draining your bank accounts to new debt from fraudulently opened credit accounts. Yes, you can usually fix the damage, but it might take you years which obviously takes its toll financially and emotionally. Check out this identity theft nightmare that left a man on the brink of financial and emotional ruin.
We recommend that you’re always aware of what’s happening around you. Sometimes there’s nothing you can physically do to prevent identify theft. However, you can protect yourself before you become a victim by taking necessary precautions and insuring potential loss. As always, we’re here to help answer any questions.
Spring Break Travel Tip #3: Protect Your Baggage
Have you ever seen the way baggage handlers “handle” your luggage? The vast majority of the time, nothing happens to your bags and they make it safely to your destination and back. However, as always, something unexpected can happen.
Some of you might remember the “United Breaks Guitars” incident from a few years ago where United baggage handlers were throwing guitars. The bad news for the baggage handlers was that the passengers could see them.
Hopefully, this doesn’t happen to you, but wouldn’t you prefer the piece of mind of knowing your baggage is covered?

Last, but not least, we highly recommend protecting your home while you’re away. Just like the locals preying on tourists, there are criminals that patrol certain neighborhoods and know exactly when families are on vacation.
